TARA brings the Nutrition + Cooking expertise to HOW YOU GLOW. Sowlaty graduated from the University of Southern California with a business degree focusing on entrepreneurship and marketing. She went on to attend the Natural Gourmet Institute for Health and Culinary Arts in New York City, where she developed her expertise in health, food, and healing. She then continued her education at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, where she was trained in hundreds of dietary theories and practices. Upon being diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, Sowlaty made the decision to begin healing herself through food using her extensive education in the field. This personal journey solidified her passion to help others, and Sowlaty has sought to expand her repertoire of knowledge everyday by experiencing all that life has to offer, bringing her clients the very best in nutrition. She works as a private chef for high profile clients throughout Los Angeles, focusing on farmer’s market, organic, and mostly gluten-free meals.

WHERE DID YOU GROW UP: Los Angeles, CA

WHEN YOU ARE EATING HEALTHY, WHAT IS A TYPICAL…

BREAKFAST: I try to get in some protein for breakfast, so a poached egg/hard boiled egg has become my go-to, on some toast with avocado, Maldon salt, and fresh cracked pepper. Fruit like blueberries, raspberries, or strawberries along with some nuts (almonds or walnuts), chia seeds, and hemp seeds usually make it in the mix too.  Also, I drink warm water with lemon. I usually like to keep it light for breakfast, but if I need something extra I like some oatmeal with lots of cinnamon, chia seeds, and golden raisins, or gluten-free toast with Hero Black Cherry Jam and good Feta cheese. I also love having some dried fruit like figs, plums, etc. to start the day

LUNCH: Lunch varies depending on the day, but usually some type of salad, soup, or more fruits.  When I want something more filling I’ll make some avocado toast on Udi’s gluten free bread, it’s my favorite!

DINNER: I love going to Erewhon or Whole Foods and getting a roast chicken, one of their soups of the day, mixing it with some quinoa, and one of their raw kale salads.  It’s super healthy and delicious, and it’s fun to mix it up and try new flavor combinations.  I’m also obsessed with pho and eat it quite often; it’s so filling and makes me feel like I’m giving my body just what it needs.  And sushi with brown rice and a seaweed salad are always one of my go-to healthy options.  Oh, and dinner is never over until I’ve gotten something sweet! I love dark chocolate with crispy quinoa, a pitted date stuffed with an almond, or chia pudding

SNACK: I’m a big snacker. I love to munch throughout the day on fruit, nuts, green juice, chia pudding, kale chips, dried fruits and more fruits (…. I’m obsessed with fruit if you can’t tell!!)

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE SPOTS/RESTAURANTS TO EAT HEALTHY? Having been vegan a few years back, I’ve come to love and appreciate a bunch of the healthy spots in LA & NYC.  My go-to in LA has to be Café Gratitude—give me some I am Grounded potatoes with tamarind sauce, an I am Accepting Sushi bowl with brown rice and quinoa, and an I am Joy coconut almond joy I am a happy girl.  I’m also obsessed with the Vegetable Hummus Wrap from A Votre Sante, probably my favorite hummus I’ve ever had. I love La Scala’s chopped salad, and I usually get it with grilled chicken and cucumber and no garbonzo beans.  Pho is life, and I love Spicy n Sour or Curry Pho from 90210pho.  In NYC, I live off One Lucky Duck’s Pumpkin Seed Herb Salad (that macadamia nut parmesan is sickly delicious!  This is always my first stop in NYC) and also Souen’s brown rice vegetable soup with salmon.  The avocado toast from Gitane is an undeniable favorite, and I can’t go without it for too long when I’m in NYC

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE INDULGENCE? Food is my absolute OBSESSION, really not a minute goes by where I don’t think about food, it’s borderline insane.  I live to eat, and a meal without delicious food is just a waste!  Every meal should be an indulgence in itself and make you feel wholly satisfied.  I live for a lobster spaghetti from Madeos, walnut bread from Poilane in Paris, Ash Blue Cheese from The Beverly Hills Cheese Store, an Uni pasta from Marea, Tsukemen dip ramen from Tsujita, Truffle Soup dumplings from Din Tai Fung, a slice of Lady M crepe cake, the Polo Lounge chocolate soufflé…. I could go on and on.  But, if I had to pick just one indulgence though, it would be CHOCOLATE.  I’m obsessed with chocolate and have it every single day.  I’m a sweets kinda girl, so no day is complete until I’ve got my sweet!

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE SPOTS/RESTAURANTS TO INDULGE? LA: Madeos– lobster spaghetti, Bolognese spaghetti, pink sauce penne, oh and some delicious mascarpone pizza too! Son of a Gun’s insane fried chicken sandwich, lobster roll, shrimp toast, and uni linguine with clams.  Sweet Rose Creamery for some fresh mint chip ice cream. NYC: Parm’s Turkey sandwich, Rubirosa’s Vodka pizza, and Sushi of Gari omakase

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR LAST MEAL ON EARTH? A Japanese multi-course kaeseki and sushi omakase, and of course ending it with something sweet—Quil Fait Bon tarts from Japan

WHAT IS THE BEST DISH YOU COOK/ YOUR FAVORITE RECIPE? I’m a trained chef and I love to cook and bake.  One of my favorite things to do is to go to the farmer’s market, get inspired by beautiful produce, and figure out a way to make the already spectacular ingredients even more delicious.  Some of my favorite recipe inspirations come from Ina Garten, The Smitten Kitchen, and my mom.  I’m most proud of my GLOW COOKIE recipe—they’re super simple to make and so good for you, they sincerely make me happy!!!

WHERE DO YOU GROCERY SHOP IN LA? Grocery shopping is truly one of my favorite things to do! I could peruse any market for hours… My staple markets are the Santa Monica Farmer’s Market on Wednesdays, Brentwood Farmer’s Market on Sundays, and Erewhon, Whole Foods, and Vicenti Foods 

WHAT IS YOUR FITNESS REGIME? (HOW OFTEN & WHAT DO YOU DO) I SoulCycle like it’s my job ☺ I ride with Ben B. as much as I can, and along with that I try to fit in yoga classes, hiking, kundalini, and stretching as much as I can.  I try to be active at least 5 days a week, and I always give myself at the very least 1 day off a week… it’s all about balance.

WHAT IS YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE? (PRODUCTS, FACIALS, ETC.) I like to keep it as natural and organic as possible when it comes to my skin.  I use a goat’s milk soap as my cleanser, given to me by my Ayurveda guru Martha.  I also use her ‘Liquid Gold’ face oil—it’s a secret blend of oils and milks that get a certain amount of moonlight and sunlight to create some magical product.  It truly makes my skin glow! I love a good facial too, I always leave super glowy…

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE NATURAL MAKEUP/ BEAUTY PRODUCTS? I love organic face oils like Roiel & Kristie Streicher’s, RMS living luminizer cream, and I swear by vitamin E oil and lavender oil

WHAT PROFESSIONAL BEAUTY/FITNESS/HEALTH GURUS DO YOU SWEAR BY? I’m super passionate about beauty, fitness, and health, and I’m inspired by those who spread that light.  I’m inspired by GP’s GOOP, the founders of SoulCycle, Martha Soffer, and my grandmother—she’s got so many tips and tricks and her glowing skin is proof of it!

WHAT IS THE BEST GIFT YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? My boyfriend took me to Japan, and I will forever be so thankful.  It was truly the most magical place I’ve ever been to, and sharing that with my love was even more special.  I’m almost positive I was Japanese in a past life and it kinda felt like a homecoming ☺ 

DESCRIBE YOUR PERFECT DAY: Jetting to Japan for a multi-course traditional Japanese breakfast at the Park Hyatt in Tokyo. Hoping over to Jimbaran Bay in Bali for some Indonesian fried rice with an egg on top.  Getting a quick snack or two in Paris—probably some rose st. honores at Laduree and some Poilan bread with some delicious French wine and cheese.  Fitting in a Tea Time set at the Claridges in London. Then rounding out the night with an al fresco dinner cooked by my two grandmothers who know how to make crispy tahdig and my special Persian-style chicken wings just how I love them ((all of this done with the ones I love of course!))

WHAT IS YOUR MOST VALUABLE BEAUTY TIP/SECRET? Never go to sleep upset!  Beauty and glow radiate from the inside out, so if your insides are taken care of, the rest of you will shine.  Nourish your passions, take care of your body, travel often, and always always always love yourself no matter what!
