The Cheng sisters set out to bring homemade dumpling greatness to the masses, and we couldn’t be more obsessed. Not only are the dumplings here Mama Mimi’s famous recipe, but they’re also organic and locally-sourced.
The Cheng sisters opened up Mimi Chengs in the East Village because they needed their fix for authentic, delicious Taiwanese-Chinese food and couldn’t find it in New York City. Nothing they found came close to their mom’s homemade dumplings, so they decided to take matters into their own hands and start making these little bundles of goodness themselves.
Growing up, Mimi would stay up late washing, chopping, shredding, mixing, and wrapping dozens of fresh dumplings to make sure her girls always had something nutritious to eat. Even when her girls left for college, she would visit them equipped with coolers of dumplings and jars of her secret sauce, enough to feed them and all their friends for weeks. This tradition continued when they moved into Manhattan, as their refrigerators were always stockpiled with fresh dumplings.
These girls are sharing Mom’s special dumplings, authentic to the organic and sustainable goodness they grew up on. Their space is as #glowy as it gets, with #goodvibesonly. Everything is made fresh daily, and with a simple and straightforward menu, you can always rely on getting incredibly juicy and delicious dumplings along with special seasonal vegetables and a seasonal dessert.
These dumplings are heart-breakingly good, and we prefer them pan-fried for some of that satisfying crispy bite. The Mimi Cheng dumpling is their rising star, filled with pasture-raised chicken and farm fresh organic zucchini. The Reinvented Classic is their version of a classic pork dumpling, filled with pasture-raised pork, local baby bok choy, and organic cabbage. The Mighty Veggie is their version of “the other green juice,” filled with organic kale, organic zucchini, free-range egg, and shiitake mushroom. And then there’s Mimi’s Secret Sauce…. holy glow, this sauce is absolutely delicious. The perfect consistency, taste, and brightness– this goodness needs to be bottled up and sold. Their cabbage salad and market seasonal veggies are spot on, and don’t miss out on their dessert dumpling (when we visited it was an apple cinnamon version topped with whipped cream. And it was sinfully insane!!!)
Mimi Cheng’s is a definite #glowspot for some downright delicious eats in NYC.
