Honey Hi // Caitlin + Kacie

Honey Hi makes the feel-good-food of our dreams. Started by best friends and now business partners, Caitlin and Kacie, this restaurant is one of our absolute favorite spots for gluten-free, refined sugar-free, local, seasonal, and artful food.

Caitlin and Kacie are best friends who met in college 11 years ago in Colorado, and now have created one of the most special spots in LA, Honey Hi. You can tell that their food comes from the heart; it's smart, healthy, and delicious food placed in a laidback and bright ambiance. Kacie is a holisitic nutrtionist with years of healthy food experience, so their menu is designed with the highest health standards. This is food that you can (and want!) to eat every day and still feel good afterwards. With her big and sweet smile, Caitlin runs the operations and the front of house. She always makes you feel so welcome and right at home.

Let's get to the food. It is truly GLOWY HEAVEN. Their food is organic and local produce as much as possible, and the entire menu is inherently gluten and refined sugar free. The meats are pasture raised, their food made from scratch, and their sweets some of the best around. Not only that, each plate is a work of art in itself, seriously stunning in presentation and you'll be sure to want to take a million photos of your food before consumption :)

We are absolutely obsessed with That One Blow, you can customize it to your liking, but we love it with their turmeric poached egg, zucchini noodles, watermelon radish, and tons of herbs. And let's talk about their avocado toast; the gluten-free bread is phenomenal, as is the addition of sweet potato. Their Green Curry Bowl is the bomb, as is their Steak Bowl. And last but not least, don't leave without trying their GHEE Chocolate Chip Cookies, we literally dream about these and are drooling as we write this.

What we love and adore most about Honey Hi is that it's en extension of both Caitlin and Kacie's hearts, these two ladies inspire us so much and we're honored to call them friends. Like them, we truly beleive that food has the power to make you feel good, and we're so grateful for the incredible care and detail they put into their food every single day. Honey Hi is the real deal, people.

See just how both Caitlin and Kacie both GLOW, below, and make sure you add Honey Hi into your LA food rotation.

HOW THEY GLOW QUESTIONNAIRE

NAME: Caitlin Sullivan

NICKNAME: Cath

PROFESSION: Co-owner of Honey Hi / Entrepreneur

WHERE DID YOU GROW UP? Bouncing between Boulder, Colorado and New York City

WHERE DO YOU LIVE? Echo Park, Los Angeles

WHEN YOU’RE EATING HEALTHY, WHAT IS A TYPICAL…

BREAKFAST: These days, I'm not big on breakfast. I like to let myself fast until around 11 or so – that’s what’s feeling best -and to be totally honest, I don’t have much time to eat in the AM! So normally breakfast is a matcha latte from Honey Hi ☺ we use Cap Beauty’s ceremonial organic matcha and then I blend with our house made sprouted almond and pumpkin seed milk. I’ll also throw a heaping scoop of grass fed collagen in there if I’m feeling wild! If I’m feeling anxious (hello small business owner life) I skip the matcha and make a dandelion tea and chaga mushroom brew with some almond milk. It’s energizing without the caffeine SO yummy.

LUNCH: Since I spend most of my time at Honey Hi, I’m usually eating a Miso bowl for lunch – that’s my go-to when I want lots of nutrients fast. But if I’m not working, I’ll make something quick and easy like breakfast tacos at home! Sprouted corn or cassava flour tortillas, scrambled eggs, avo, sautéed greens, lots of herbs a little hot sauce! That’s heaven to me.

DINNER: Go-to week night meal is a giant veggie stir fry. Whatever veg I have in the fridge from the farmers market and then I just crack and fry a pastured egg on top and tons of soft herbs. Or roast some salmon to eat with it. I LOVE to cook, it’s so meditative and tactile and it’s how I practice self care. Unfortunately, there’s so much less time in my day for cooking for myself these days, so simplicity is key. Meals do not have to be extravagant to be delicious and super nutrient dense.

SNACK: Have y’all tried Simple Mills Cassava and Almond flour crackers??? They are absolutely my kryptonite and the best snack ever with Back to Life Spinach Arugula Pesto Dip.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE SPOTS/RESTAURANTS TO EAT HEALTHY? oh man this is so hard... Restaurant eating is my favorite sport. It’s truly my favorite thing in the world to do. In LA: Erewhon!!! Botanica. Honey Hi. Baroo. Dune. Moon Juice! In NY: Hu Kitchen. Souen. Brodo. Via Carota.  Mimi’s Hummus.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE INDULGENCE? French Fries with a large assortment of dip options. Everyone knows that French fries are just a vehicle for sauce/dips and dips are the best thing in the world, right?

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE SPOTS/RESTAURANTS TO INDULGE? In LA: Speranza in Silverlake. Bestia! Hama Sushi in little Tokyo (get the Obama roll). Son of A Gun. In NY: Panna II. The Odeon. Raouls.

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR LAST MEAL ON EARTH? A lamb chop, buttered bowtie pasta with parmesan cheese and fresh green peas with butter and salt prepared by my mother. This was the type of food she made for a picky eating kid (me) and it’s just pure coziness in my mind. She is an absolutely incredible chef by the way, sorry mom for making you dumb down your cooking until I turned 20.

WHAT IS THE BEST DISH YOU COOK/ YOUR FAVORITE RECIPE? My favorite thing to cook is soup. I love the freedom and just adding things until you love it. No rules. A curried chicken soup I love to make has sprung back into my mind since it’s finally cooling down in LA. Perhaps it needs to be a special at Honey Hi for the winter!

WHERE DO YOU GROCERY SHOP? The farmers market, lassens, erewhon, thrive market.

TOP 3 ITEMS YOU ALWAYS HAVE IN YOUR KITCHEN? Really good butter or ghee, lemons, garlic

WHAT IS YOUR FITNESS REGIMEN? (how often & what you do) Oh boy! After starting a business, it’s a bit all over the place. Growing up in the mountains, the most natural way I like to exercise is outside. But lately because I’m on my feet so much, my body needs to stretch so I’m doing a lot more yoga. I am madly in love with LOVE’s new studio in echo park, its just down the street from my house so it make’s it super easy to catch a class before or after work.

WHAT IS YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE? (products, facials, etc) Drinking tons of water and staying away from sugar! That’s the biggest part of the routine that I’m always trying to tackle. I wash my face with a mild soap like dr. bronners baby soap at night. Then I slather NOTO Botanics deep serum all over my face and neck. And in the mornings I apply SPF40 sunscreen. I have the fairest skin in the world – so I must protect. Gloria’s (NOTO) facial oil is my absolute favorite. It smells like heaven and exactly the type of moisture I need. My skin is so dry especially in LA. I’ve also started using the NOTO Scrub on my face a couple times a week to exfoliate. Everything Gloria makes is heavenly and I trust her so much. I only use natural skincare products and I know she uses the best stuff. I want her to make an eye cream next, cause I need one!

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE MAKEUP/NATURAL BEAUTY PRODUCTS? I don’t wear a lot of makeup – but my go-tos are RMS, Mineral Fusion and NOTO.

IF YOU WERE STRANDED ON A DESERT ISLAND, WHAT 3 PRODUCTS WOULD YOU TAKE WITH YOU? Sunscreen! So much sunscreen. Mountain Ocean Skin Trip Lotion (best lotion ever). And ohana organics shea butter balm for my lips.

WHAT PROFESSIONAL BEAUTY/HEALTH/FITNESS/SPIRITUAL GURUS DO YOU SWEAR BY? Kacie Carter – my business partner/best friend/work wife. She has encyclopedic knowledge about food, health, nutrition and biology. I’m so lucky to have that little encyclopedia by my side. Jerry Seinfeld – a modern day philosopher, my spiritual guru, my biggest creative influence and the reason I started meditating.

MOST-WATCHED MOVIE? CLUELESS !!!!!

MOST LIFE-CHANGING BOOK? Ishmael – Which I read in my high school philosophy class. Shout out to Mr. Dornan for expanding my mind at 16.

FAVORITE SHOPS/BOUTIQUES? Right now I’m obsessed with Varsity Vintage in Hollywood. The lovely humans who run the place are genius and have the best taste. I also love Sleeper Underground in Echo Park for clothes. Tortoise in Venice is the best for home stuff.

COOLEST PLACE YOU’VE EVER VISITED? Tokyo. It sort of feels like visiting the moon. I love it so much.

WHAT IS THE BEST GIFT YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? A deep chocolate and chaga donuts from Moon Juice after a bad day. That’s all it takes to turn it around.

MOST PROFOUND HEALING EXPERIENCE YOU’VE EVER HAD? After experiencing depression/anxiety/adrenal fatigue working long hours at a job I didn’t love and a major heartbreak, I started paying attention to what did and didn’t feel good to me. From food, to relationships, to work – It wasn’t until then that I started understanding the importance of  caring about yourself.

WHO ARE YOUR MOST TRUSTED HEALERS? My friends. Relationships/community are the biggest comforts and healers for me. I’m really lucky to have a wildly smart and caring group of friends who take care of eachother.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST LEARNING EXPERIENCE YOU’VE HAD TO FACE AND WHAT DID YOU TAKE AWAY FROM IT? Opening a restaurant with my best friend! The learning is all still happening ☺ So far, the biggest take-away is that everything is “figure-out-able” as we like to say. Whatever obstacle we run into – we figure it out. There’s no other option. It’s so challenging and rewarding.

DESCRIBE YOUR PERFECT DAY. Sleeping a lot. Eating a lot. Hanging with friends. Going to the movies.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST VALUABLE GLOW TIP/SECRET? Get to know yourself and what does and does not work for you. Start now. Pay attention. From what you put in and on your body, to who and what you spend you time with and on. Find out what’s emotionally nutritious for you. Make that a priority.

Get the heirloom seconds from Tutti Frutti at the farmers market during late summer/early fall- theyre super cheap and cook them down with lots of garlic, sage, shallot, rosemary & thyme, bone broth.

WHERE DO YOU GROCERY SHOP? I mean…let’s be honest, I don’t grocery shop too often anymore as I’m always at work. But when I do, I love the farmers markets, Cookbook, erewhon, whole foods, and I use Thrive Market often for affordable pantry items, cleaning supplies, etc.

TOP 3 ITEMS YOU ALWAYS HAVE IN YOUR KITCHEN? Vitamix Maldon Salt Castelvetrano Olives

WHAT IS YOUR FITNESS REGIMEN? (how often & what you do) I pretty much just practice Ashtanga Yoga mysore style, where you memorize the sequence and the teacher just goes around and gives adjustments and allows you to progress through the series as you’re ready. It doubles as my meditation and my exercise, and so much more than that.

WHAT IS YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE? (products, facials, etc) I never wash my face in the mornings anymore, just once at night with Dr. Ohirra’s probiotic facewash bar. I use my friend Gloria’s line Noto Botanics in its entirety and it’s completely transformed my skin. I stopped using lotions a long time ago and pretty much just slather myself in oils now.

MOST PROFOUND HEALING EXPERIENCE YOU’VE EVER HAD? I recently lost my cousin and she came to see me in a dream when I needed her most.

WHO ARE YOUR MOST TRUSTED HEALERS? Myself, my cat Gus and my therapist.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST LEARNING EXPERIENCE YOU’VE HAD TO FACE AND WHAT DID YOU TAKE AWAY FROM IT? In my early twenties I had a life-changing health crash where it felt like my body was completely failing on me. I was terrified. Instead of giving into it, I threw myself into learning about how my body worked, just how profoundly food affects us, and how powerful our bodies innate healing capacities are. This taught me to be empowered rather than discouraged. My health crash and healing journey ultimately gave rise to Honey Hi, which is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever created and experienced in my life so in the end, it all happened for a reason. When I face difficulties now, I’m always asking myself how it can teach me and how I can grow if I allow it to unfold rather than reject it. There’s always a lesson.

DESCRIBE YOUR PERFECT DAY. Wake up early without an alarm. Sit quietly in meditation for twenty minutes. Make a cup of chaga or a matcha and practice yoga. Spend the whole day cooking with friends, at my home, and someone else cleans up ☺
